Don MacLeod, a psychologist specialising in traumatic bereavement, believes that expats need to think about the issue of emergencies in advance.

“It’s hard for human beings to imagine bad times when we’re in the midst of good times,” he says, “but you need to make plans – and really make them. Sit down and talk it out.”
